Scooter Guide Langkawi: Rent a scooter on Langkawi

Rent a scooter on Langkawi

If you are planning a vacation in Malaysia, Langkawi is probably one of the islands that is considered in many travel reports as one of the highlights in Malaysia. Pulau Langkawi as it is called in Malay is not only a single island but a whole archipelago with 99 different islands. From Kuala Lumpur it takes about 1 hour to fly to this beautiful island. Since it is a tax free zone you can buy alcohol, clothes and cigarettes very cheaply, but also otherwise a vacation on Langkawi is not exactly expensive. At the latest when you arrive on Langkawi either by ferry from Georgetown or by plane, you have to ask yourself how you want to get around on the island, because the island is not that small and without a vehicle the distances are very long. Of course, there is besides rental car and grave also the possibility to rent a scooter and thus explore the island. We decided against the car and wanted to explore the island and the great beaches and sights with a scooter of a scooter rental. Since Martina has never driven a scooter before, she saw the vacation island of Langkawi as an optimal opportunity to learn how to drive a scooter.

Where can you rent a scooter in Langkawi?

Before we came to the island, we have already read some travel reports to find out where you should rent a scooter best. However, we have found here no exact information or highlights that have convinced us at the first moment. It was only important to us that the scooter rental has a “Rent License” and we get roadworthy scooters.

In our search for a good rental company, we checked out Rent:

What do I have to consider when renting a scooter?

What should you consider when renting a scooter on Langkawi? Before we got ourselves a scooter, we have of course read some testimonials and reviews. There are some things that you should definitely consider when renting or before renting.

  • Check the reviews of the rental company on Trip Advisor or Google Maps.
  • The provider should not be in a backyard, but directly on a main road, so you can be relatively sure that it is a rental with a license
  • Check the scooter for damage and functionality before handing it over and take photos
  • Get a copy of the rental contract
  • Read the rental contract carefully
  • Try to negotiate the price (especially important for long term rentals)
  • Ask about the amount of insurance and registration of the scooter
  • When renting the scooter should be included a helmet

How expensive is a scooter on Langkawi?

We have now compared some of the providers on the island and have mostly got relatively equal prices. You should definitely still negotiate the price here especially if it is a long term rental.

The cost per scooter varies depending on CCM and size between RM 20 – 45 per day. We paid a total of 119 euros for our two scooters for 14 days. That’s about RM 19.5 a day which is about 4.20 euros a day per scooter.

Petrol in Langkawi was 54 euro cents per liter or RM2.5 per liter in November 2019.

What license do I need to rent a scooter?

We have often found in discussions with the providers that no international driver’s license was required, also in other travel reports we have very often read that renting a scooter was possible without an international driver’s license without any problems.

Often one is asked also still by the offerers whether one would like to have a “small Scooter” or a “large Scooter”. Here, not the size of the scooter is meant, but rather the motorization of the mobile base. We have decided for smaller machines, since we with our driving license of the class B actually also only 50 ccm scooters legally may and we wanted to take no risk that we with a police control nevertheless problems could get, since our driving license would not permit actually at all the driving of larger scooters

We had no problem with our scooters – although they went a lot faster than a 50 CCM scooter would allow. However, we also obeyed the speed limits and tried not to attract attention. We always had our driver’s license and international driver’s license with us while using our scooter, so that we could have shown the documents directly in case of queries. From problems with the police we have heard and read nothing on Langkawi. In other regions of the world, however, you should pay attention, otherwise you could be fast because of driving without a license.

We hope we could answer some of the most important questions with our travel tips and scooter guide before you decide to rent a scooter on Langkawi.
